FORT WASKAKIE, Wyo. — The Wind River Development Fund (WRDF) announced that it was awarded a $300,000 grant from the Native American Agriculture Fund (NAAF) to support Native American farmers and ranchers.
The grant will provide lending capital for Native agricultural businesses, funds for a Native Ag Resource Day on the Wind River Reservation and initial funding to start the Wind River Development Fund Scholarship Program for Native youth seeking a college-level education in agriculture, according to the WRDF.
“Through our strong partnership with NAAF, we will continue to strengthen the agricultural industry on the Reservation,” WRDF Executive Director Paul F. Huberty said via press release. “Ranching, farming and all agricultural careers are important elements of our history, culture and livelihood. We are pleased to be among just 38 organizations nationwide to receive funding from the Native American Agriculture Fund in this funding cycle.”
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the strong agricultural traditions on the Reservation are disappearing due to agricultural producers retiring and the dwindling numbers of youth continuing in the farming and ranching industry. Educational funding and exposure to agriculture opportunities will help to provide Native youth with positive relationships and the training needed to run a business.
“By directly addressing longstanding barriers for Native producers, these grants foster growth and sustainability of agricultural ecosystems throughout Indian Country,” NAAF CEO Toni Stanger-McLaughlin said via press release.
WRDF is a Native-led Community Development Financial Institution focused on stimulating economic development and enhancing the quality of life on and near the Wind River Reservation. The nonprofit provides financial opportunities, technical assistance and training to Native-owned businesses.
