STAR VALLEY, Wyo. — A large law enforcement presence in Star Valley on Wednesday morning was in response to a 911 call about a domestic incident on Jack Knife Creek Road in Idaho, less than a mile west of the Wyoming border.
According to an updated news release from the Bonneville County Sheriff, the incident ended after 43-year-old Christopher Moon shot his wife Cassandra Moon, 23, then shot himself. There were no other people on the scene, which was northwest of Etna, Wyoming.
At 8:06 a.m. on Jan. 21, Bonneville County Dispatchers received a 911 call from a man indicating that he had just shot his wife. The man identified himself as Christopher Moon and said that he had a gun and was going to take his own life. Responding law enforcement included: Bonneville County Sheriff’s deputies and SWAT Team, Lincoln County Wyoming Sheriff’s Office and Star Valley Ambulance.
Responding officers arrived at the scene to find two vehicles parked on the side of the road. The news release states that deputies established brief contact with Christopher over the phone, and attempted to convince him to surrender peacefully.
“Moments later Christopher was observed using the gun to shoot himself,” reads the statement. “Deputies approached the vehicles finding both Christopher and Cassandra deceased from apparent gun shot wounds.”
According to WyoFile, the road was expected to be closed for most of the day on Wednesday. Deputies spent several hours collecting evidence and investigating the scene.
The Star Valley Independent reported that Cassandra Moon was also known locally as Cassie Clinger. This has not been independently confirmed, though Buckrail received a tip that included the link to a GoFundMe in memory of Cassie Clinger.
