JACKSON, Wyo. — Governor Mark Gordon again encouraged citizens to stay the course with COVID precautions even as the state experienced its highest spike yet in cases (941 active cases) during a press conference Thursday. Additionally, with current health orders running through the end of the month, Gordon said he plans on easing restrictions further when he makes an official announcement next week.
The governor shared that Wyoming is currently the 4th least restricted state when it comes to measures in place to slow the spread of the coronavirus. And he was not interested in making Wyoming more so on that front.
“I’m not interested in imposing additional health orders because we know that things are working and that taking simple steps can prevent transmission and protect our residents,” Gordon said during the press conference, adding that it has always been about personal responsibility in Wyoming as far as he was concerned.
The recent spike in cases statewide has been attributed to a return to school and a return to bars. Still, the Wyoming Department of Health said it would ease some of its quarantine restrictions after learning most schools with pop-up cases have been able to contain spread rather successfully as long as students were masking up.
Dr. Alexia Harrist also spoke at the press conference where she urged all Wyomingites to get their annual flu shot this fall as health officials worry the flu season could further burden the healthcare system already dealing with COVID.
