JACKSON, Wyo. — Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) is fighting a new wildfire, dubbed the Leeds Creek Fire, in the Pinedale Ranger District.
The fire was first reported Thursday, August 1 at 10:47 a.m. by Forest Service staff who noticed smoke coming from the Union Pass area. The blaze, located 9.5 miles southwest of Dubois, covered 100 acres as of the morning of August 2, according to a BTNF Facebook post.
The cause of the fire, which is burning through mixed conifer and debris, remains unknown. Smoke generated by the fire can be seen from the Continental Divide Trail, Dubois and Pinedale, according to BTNF.
A Type 3 incident commander, a group of skilled firefighters, two helicopters and several fire engines are on the scene.
“The Forest Service uses all available strategies and tools to manage wildfires, and public and firefighter safety are the top priorities for fire managers,” BTNF said on its Facebook page.
BTNF’s fire danger rating is currently high, meaning that small fuels will ignite easily and people should take precautions when lighting any fires in the area.
