JACKSON, Wyo. — The Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation (JHWF), Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) and the Bridger-Teton National Forest are going to host the annual Moose Day survey on Saturday, Feb. 21. The survey takes place each year in late February or early March.

Citizen scientists and wildlife managers will collect observations to “paint a more accurate picture of moose numbers in the area,” according to a Facebook post. Attendees will be split up in teams of two to eight and will be assigned parcels, likely nearly private lands or developed areas where WGFD surveys can be more challenging.

The data collected will help monitor moose population trends in the area over time and assist in conservation efforts.

“Moose Day is a rewarding winter project that brings the community together while fostering a deeper connection to the valley’s wildlife and wild lands,” the JHWF website reads.

Registration is required to attend. To participate, registrants must be a trained Nature Mapper and have completed a virtual training to ensure accurate observations.

Those interested in registering for Moose Day can find more information on the JHWF website here.
