YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — Biscuit Basin in Yellowstone National Park is letting off some end-of-year steam.

On Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) posted to its “Volcanoes” social media accounts with a video of Black Diamond Pool exploding. Biscuit Basin is the site of a major July 2024 hydrothermal explosion that threw rocks and mud several hundred feet into the air and wrecked a nearby boardwalk.

The eruption on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 20, is the latest in a string of explosive happenings at Black Diamond Pool since the initial event last summer. The video shows the pool erupting against a clear blue sky. Over the summer, the scientists of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) installed a temporary webcam to keep track of events in the hot pools since the area remains closed to the public.

“Over the past few weeks there have been several such events, mostly at night or when the camera was obscured by ice — they were audible, but not visible,” reads the social media caption.
