JACKSON, Wyo. — After another unseasonably warm weather pattern, it’s time for commuters to buckle up.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning that will be in effect from 1 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Wednesday. The weather advisory includes surrounding mountainous areas including Yellowstone National Park; the Absaroka, Teton, Gros Ventre and Wind River Mountains; as well as the Salt River and Wyoming Ranges.
According to the storm warning, heavy snow and high winds are possible. Snow accumulation totals could reach 6 to 12 inches above 8,000 feet, with 16 inches forecast at the highest elevations. Winds could gust from 50 to 70 mph, with stronger isolated winds expected. A rain and snow mix is likely at lower elevations. The heaviest snow is expected between 5 a.m. and noon on Wednesday. NWS stated that snow rates might exceed 1 inch per hour.
NWS cautions drivers that travel will be difficult, especially on mountain passes, with reduced visibility due to strong winds and snow. Drivers are urged to keep a flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency.
