JACKSON, Wyo. — In the winter, the National Elk Refuge fills up with herds of elk coming down from the snowy mountains to graze.

Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer snapped some photos of the sleigh rides mingling with the herd, which have been traveling through the Refuge on wheels so far this year due to lack of snow.

Typically the elk linger around the Refuge from mid-December through early April.

“The National Elk Refuge was established in 1912 as a ‘winter game reserve’ to support the conservation of wintering elk and their habitat,” according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. It is certainly a beautiful place to visit year round, but the winter holds a particular charm over the place.
