JACKSON, Wyo. — On Saturday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. the Chabad Jewish Center of Wyoming will host a Grand Menorah Lighting on Town Square. The lighting will serve as a public vigil in memory of the victims of the recent attack in Sydney, Australia.

For the first time, the Town will have an ice-sculpted menorah that will remain on display in Town Square throughout the Hanukkah (sometimes spelled Chanukah) holiday. Hanukkah began this year on Sunday, Dec. 14.

“This year’s gathering carries special significance, as the community comes together not only to celebrate Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, but also to stand united against violence, antisemitism and hatred,” a statement from the Jewish Center reads. “The vigil will offer a moment of collective remembrance and strength, affirming shared values of peace, compassion and resilience.”

After the lighting, families are invited to enjoy the Hanukkah gelt drop, when chocolate coins will be released. There will also be traditional foods like potato latkes, jelly-filled sufganiyot and hot chocolate. Attendees should plan to dress warmly.

“This evening is about coming together as a community,” co-director of the Chabad Jewish Center of Wyoming Raizy Mendelsohn said in the statement. “In moments of pain and uncertainty, being present for one another brings warmth, comfort, and strength.”
