Wyoming Special Olympics 2018 begins in Jackson Hole this week

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – This week more than 350 Special Olympics Wyoming athletes, Unified Sports® Partners and coaches from all over the Cowboy State will arrive in Jackson for this year’s State Winter Games competition.

State Winter Games is one of the four main state competition events held during the year. Athletes will compete in Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort while Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing athletes will compete at Teton Pines.

Teams from the communities of Casper, Cody, Crook County, Douglas, Evanston, Ft. Washakie, Gillette, Jackson, Lander, Laramie, Newcastle, Powell, Pinedale, Riverton, Sheridan, Star Valley, Thermopolis, Upton, Washakie County and Rapid City, SD. will be competing.

The 2018 event takes place February 6-8 and will kick off with a Law Enforcement Torch Run through the community of Jackson starting at approximately 2pm on Tuesday, February 6. Law Enforcement and athletes will carry the Flame of Home to the Winter Games Opening Ceremony at Jackson Hole High School that begins at 7pm.

The Opening Ceremony, at Jackson Hole High School, is where all of the athletes, Unified Sports partners, coaches and volunteers will gather for team introductions and other preliminaries before the lighting of the “Flame of Hope.”

Competition will begin at 9am on Wednesday, February 7 at various competition sites and run through 4pm. The Snow King Resort Hotel will host a 50’s Sock Hop themed banquet and victory dance at 6pm on Wednesday night. Competition resumes at 9:30am on Thursday, February 8 until completion at approximately 2pm. Awards will be presented immediately following competition at each location.
