Wyoming Public Media gets support to cover Wind River Region

Wyoming Public Media was just able to hire a full-time reporter to cover the Wind River Reservation, thanks to support from Report for America.

Savannah Maher’s Wyoming reporting chapter begins this month. Report for America helps place emerging journalists into local news organizations, but Maher already has quite the resume under her feet. A proud citizen of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, Maher got her start in journalism reporting for her hometown’s local paper, The Mashpee Enterprise, and public radio station WCAI. She has since contributed to New Hampshire Public Radio, High Country News, and NPR’s Code Switch blog. She has also been a producer for NPR’s midday show “Here & Now,” where her work explored Native American issues. She’s a graduate of Dartmouth College.

WPM General Manager Christina Kuzmych emphasized the value of Maher’s reporting. “WMP produces strong stories and features from the wind river reservation, but not with a consistency and depth we would like,” Kuzmych said. “Report for America’s reporter lets us focus on this part of Wyoming. It complements UW’s American Indian Studies program as well as the worth our Wyoming media colleagues are doing in their coverage.”

Sometimes compared to the AmeriCorps of journalism, Report For America journalists places journalists in local newsrooms for one or two years to report on community critical issues. Report for America leverages a unique funding match model, paying half of a corps member’s salary and encouraging matching support from local news partners and foundations as well as dedicated donors.
