Wyoming National Guard crew headed to California as smoke blows east into Wyoming

WYOMING—The U.S National Weather Service predicts smoke from the western wildfires will begin to move eastward into the afternoon filling the valleys in Northwestern Wyoming with smoke. Jackson remains under a fire weather watch with elevated fire weather conditions predicted until at least Tuesday.

On Sept. 9, during a COVID-19 press conference update, Governor Gordon spoke about activating a Wyoming National Guard crew to fight the fires in California. “I know the people of Wyoming will join me in wishing them a safe journey and safe work saving more lives and more country,” said Gordon.

The Wyoming Army National Guard’s G Company, 2nd Battalion, 211th Aviation Regiment was activated on Sept 10. Four crew members along with one UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter will operate from Mather Airport in Sacramento until Sept. 25 unless extended. “We have the capability to aid another state in need and provide another resource to California and its citizens to help mitigate the loss of life and property during what is now been characterized as California’s worst fire season on record,” said Maj. Gen. Greg Porter, adjutant general of Wyoming.

The Black Hawk is equipped with a collapsible Bambi Bucket, a fire suppression system, which holds approximately 660 gallons of water. The crew will drop water on hot spots that are difficult for ground crews to access.
