Wyoming is 2019’s 2nd most energy-expensive state

WYOMING – With unprofitable coal and nuclear plants continuing to shut down despite current administration support, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2019’s Most & Least Energy-Expensive States.

As the nation’s leading coal producer, Wyoming has been hit especially hard by the decline in coal’s popularity as an energy source. Just days ago, Blackjewel LLC, operator of Gillette-area Eagle Butte and Belle Ayr mines, announced it was filing for bankruptcy. The news comes on the heels of equally large coal producers scaling back their operations in recent years including Peabody Energy (North Antelope Rochelle) and Arch Coal (Black Thunder Mine).

None of it is good news for the state’s economy, which finds Wyoming ranking second to only Connecticut when it comes to a rank of the nation’s most energy-expensive states.

For a better understanding of Americans’ energy costs relative to their location and consumption habits, WalletHub compared the average monthly energy bills in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia using a special formula that accounts for the following residential energy types: electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating oil.

Energy Consumption & Costs in Wyoming (1=Most Expensive; 25=Avg.):

  • Avg. Monthly Energy Bill: $363
  • 27th – Electricity Consumption per Consumer
  • 11th – Natural-Gas Consumption per Consumer
  • 26th – Price of Motor Fuel
  • 1st – Motor-Fuel Consumption per Driver
