Wyoming aims to be ahead of the curve with computer science in schools

WYOMING – State lawmakers will consider a bill that would make Wyoming one of the only states to require computer science instruction to K-12 education.

Citing a growing trend toward the use of computers in the business place and the need for a basic understanding of coding and programming, legislators advanced a bill out of the Joint Education Interim Committee on February 14 where it easily passed three readings of the Senate as a whole.

Last Friday’s third-reading vote was 27-2-1, moving SF29 to the House for introduction.

The act calls for adding computer science and computational thinking to the state educational program; replacing ‘keyboarding’ from the state educational program. Virginia passed a similar bill in 2016, becoming the first state to require computer science in its Standards of Learning.
