JACKSON, Wyo. — VIM fitness studio celebrated its 10th anniversary this month, celebrating an action-packed decade of adaption and reinvention. 

Opening in 2012 with a foundation and focus of Schwinn Indoor Cycling, VIM now is proud to offer a wide of classes like vertical climbing, strength and conditioning, slide board, barre, and yoga while the tried and true favorites of authentic indoor cycling and rowing remain. Members also have the opportunity to come in on their own to train.

The fitness industry was faced with some big challenges when the pandemic forced widespread shutdowns two years ago, but Julie Guttormson, owner of VIM, viewed this as a challenge she was built for.

“The pandemic changed the way we were doing business,” she said.

Smaller classes meant the door was open to shake things up. Guttormson saw this as an opportunity to bring in more ways to move that her team and members were craving.

But first, VIM’s origin story: Just 31 and a year into her new life in Jackson, Guttormson suffered a stroke. But she walked away healthy, and came out the other side with a new outlook on life. Fitness had always been her salve; but after that fateful day in 2006, it became her life’s purpose.

Six years later, she opened the doors to Revolution Indoor Cycling, now VIM.

Anyone who has been through Guttormson’s doors will recognize VIM as more than just a fitness studio. It is a community, a place for camaraderie and connection, Guttormson says. It is a home for people of all ages and fitness levels to thrive.

VIM’s foundation is built upon Schwinn® Indoor Cycling, the industry’s most progressive and respected coaching education. The fitness industry is constantly evolving and improving; so, too, is VIM and its instructors.

“This industry has always moved fast and it’s important to continue to grow and constantly embrace the change,” Guttormson says. “I have always brought in education to keep my team fresh, curious and growing.”

The studio rebranded in 2019 to reflect its expanded offerings and vibrant energy.

“VIM means ‘energy and enthusiasm,’ and was a perfect fit for myself and the space I worked so hard to create,” Guttormson says. “The strength and meaning of the name stood strong as we entered into and navigated through the pandemic. Keeping our community together through virtual classes and on demand allowed me to now offer a hybrid experience for my clients.”

Indeed, not even a pandemic could slow Guttormson down. When COVID hit, she sprang into action to offer at-home ways to move and ways to stay connected. She rented out her equipment — nearly every piece she owned — and worked hard to elevate the at-home experience for VIM users. VIM still offers livestream and on-demand classes, and a hybrid pass so clients can show up to class from wherever they are.

Even if you haven’t set foot in Guttormson’s studio, you may recognize her as the endlessly energetic face of Rock the Ride. It’s the best party you’ll find at 9 a.m. — or really any time. Guttormson leads riders through a vigorous spin workout, fueled by energizing music and team spirit. Since 2016, Rock the Ride has proudly raised $300,000 for local stroke and cardiac patients for St. John’s Hospital Foundations.

Rock the Ride was another pandemic casualty, but Guttormson is getting ready to bring it back this fall.

“Creating a community experience is what I love,” Guttormson says. “Whether it is at VIM in a class, for my team to grow and evolve with, or a memorable experience this community can take part in!”

VIM received the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce award for Small Business of The Year 2021-22 and Guttormson was awarded the Wyoming Women Of Influence award for Personal Training and Wellness 2021-22.
