Train to help in a disaster

JACKSON, Wyo. — When disaster strikes Jackson, as it did twice this summer with two major fires in town, it’s hard to know how to help.

That doesn’t stop people from trying. And Teton County Emergency Management has a program dedicated to community-wide disaster response.

Teton County’s Community Emergency Response Team, CERT, are the unsung heroes of local emergencies. In the midst of disaster, the volunteer team provides critical assistance to firefighters, law enforcement, and other emergency responders. They’re also trained to help the public in the event of an evacuation.

And anyone can join CERT with the right training. Teton County Emergency Management is hosting a CERT training October 19, 20, 26, and 27 from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Participants will learn basic first aid, incident triage, small fire suppression, light urban search and rescue, disaster psychology, and more.
