Snowmobiler killed in Palisades avalanche

VICTOR, Ida. — Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, Search and Rescue, and Air Idaho Rescue recovered the body of 46-year-old Robert Kincaid of Victor, Idaho this morning.

Kincaid was reported missing at approximately 5:40 p.m. Friday, April 3 after being buried in an avalanche in the Austin Canyon area. The report came from a snowmobile rider who said their party was riding northeast of the Sheep Creek area when they were caught in an avalanche. Kincaid had been missing for approximately an hour before his group could find cell service and call for help.

Deputies, Forest Service Law Enforcement, and Air Idaho Rescue responded to the area and located the remaining riders in the party. Poor weather prohibited a complete rescue, and rescue efforts resumed this morning.

It was determined that Kincaid was wearing an avalanche beacon but it was not activated at the time of the avalanche. It is unclear at this time why the beacon was not activated.

Avalanche danger is currently rated moderate. Another slide was triggered by a skier on Ramshorn Peak yesterday, and a snowboarder was killed on Taylor Mountain Wednesday afternoon.
