Snow is perfect holiday gift, stay safe

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – The forecasted snow event for this weekend is winding up but certainly qualifies for a “dump” at upper elevations.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is reporting a foot in the last 24 hours, Grand Targhee has measured 15 inches in the same time period. Teton Pass is holding up but no unnecessary travel is being recommended. Chain Law is in effect.

Latest road conditions.

Across the region, expect flat open areas to have limited visibility as blowing snow continues to slow travel. With no built-up snowbanks along the sides of roads, it is difficult to identify the shoulder, so motorists should proceed slowly, especially when encountering oncoming traffic.

Several accidents have been reported by officers from the Rock Springs Police Department. Chief Dwane Pacheco said plow trucks and sanders are having difficulty keeping up with deteriorating road conditions. His department has responded to numerous crashes throughout the city. The Belt Route is currently closed due to unsafe conditions.

“We understand many people are currently out finishing preparations for the holidays and the police department would ask that everyone slow down and drive cautiously until conditions improve. Travel safely and enjoy the holidays,” Pacheco said.

Heavy snowload has the backcountry a little bit dicey today and tomorrow. A Western Wyoming Avalanche Advisory has been issued by the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center. The avalanche hazard forecast is HIGH for today and tomorrow.
