Shriners pull the plug on skijoring event

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – The Jackson Hole Shrine Club and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort made a determination yesterday that a safe course will not be possible for the scheduled 6th Annual Jackson Hole Skijoring event. It was to have taken place February 10-11 at the Snake River Ranch

Faced with challenges with the snowpack on the lower elevation valley floor and warming temperatures in the forecast, JHMR course builder Rick Grant, and JH Shrine Club event committee chair Lou Scarlett, determined that there was no way for a safe course to be built to host the event.

Skijoring brings together the juxtaposed sports of extreme skiing and rodeo—a single skier is pulled behind a horse and rider at top speed, navigating a course of slalom gates and jumps. Unsafe and icy course conditions can lead to injuries for skier, rider, and horse.

“Safety for both our two-legged and four-legged athletes is our singular priority in skijoring,” said JHMR business development director Bill Lewkowitz. “As much as we love the Shriners and this seminal Jackson event, we saw no way through to ensure the proper safety conditions to support this year’s skijoring event.”

The Jackson Hole Skijoring event was cancelled in 2017 as well, after a severe storm brought warm temperatures and high winds which downed a number of power poles on the skijoring course. All event planners are disappointed to see another cancellation, but are united in their commitment to hosting an event that is safe for everyone.
