Republicans narrow Secretary of State field to three

WYOMING – After receiving eight filings for Secretary of State, the Wyoming Republican Party State Central Committee has whittled the field to three nominees.

As part of its statutory responsibility, the State Central Committee met in Cheyenne on February 24 to consider applications from eight candidates.

The committee consists of the chairman, and committeeman and committeewoman from each of Wyoming’s 23 counties. They voted to send three names to Governor Matt Mead—Ed Buchanan from Torrington, Darin Smith from Cheyenne, and Richard George from Cody.

Ed Buchanan

Buchanan, 50, is an attorney with Sawyer, Warren, and Buchanan. He is a UW graduate, former officer in the US Air Force, and a 10-year veteran of the Wyoming State Legislature.

Darin Smith

Smith, 44, is a fourth-generation Wyomingite who grew up in Rock Springs. In addition to maintaining a successful law practice in Cheyenne, which he sold in 2005, Smith has also spent the last 11 years working for the Christian Broadcasting Network. He is a 1996 UW grad.

Richard George

George, 34, farms more than 900 acres between Cody and Powell. He holds elected positions within the Park County and Wyoming Republican parties.

The Governor will appoint one person to fill the remaining term of former Secretary of State Ed Murray, who recently resigned.
