JACKSON HOLE, WYO – After months of struggling with a decision, the board of county commissioners today granted the Teton Raptor Center unanimous approval of its Conditional Use Permit (CUP), zoning compliance verification and a variance associated with planned expansion at the bird sanctuary.
The Raptor Center submitted the CUP in July only to watch the project bog down under heavy community scrutiny ranging from property layout, preservation of historic barns, and the number of public events the center could host every month.
After approval from the Planning Commission in January, the BCC twice put off a decision as meetings involving the Raptor Center maxed out allotted meeting times again and again.
At today’s regular board meeting commissioners made the findings for some 16 attached conditions for the CUP but stopped short of waiving application fees for the nonprofit’s proposed rezone and redevelopment.
From the Raptor Center
In celebration of the decision today, the Teton Raptor Center announced an open house for the community to learn more about the proposed changes at its property in Wilson.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 13, from 5-7pm at the Old Wilson Schoolhouse. TRC staff, board members, and project team members will be available to provide information and answer questions about Teton Raptor Center’s improvement and site rehabilitation plans for the historic Hardeman Ranch in Wilson.
“The approval allows TRC to move forward on plans to centralize raptor conservation operations and staff in one location; enhance educational experiences through a dedicated program space in the windproof gothic North Barn; improve rehabilitation outcomes for injured, ill, and orphaned birds of prey with an upgraded clinic and new flight barn; and invigorate research and collaboration opportunities with improved facilities,” the center stated in a press release.
