WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two articles of impeachment against the Trump presidency were passed by the House of Representatives yesterday, December 18.
The articles, which include abuse of power and obstruction of congress, drew several hours of intense, rapid fire partisan debate on the House floor. The subsequent impeachment vote largely followed party lines. Representatives voted 230-197 to charge Trump with abuse of power and 229-198 to charge him with obstruction of Congress.
Trump marked tonight’s historic vote with a nearly two-hour rally speech before supporters in Michigan. The delivery was the longest of his presidency and featured themes of Republican unity.
The vote progresses impeachment proceedings to the Senate, which is charged with deciding whether or not to convict President Trump and remove him from office. Trial is expected in January.
Donald Trump is the third U.S. President to be impeached.
