NYE in the Hole: 2020 vision says ‘catch a ride’

JACKSON, Wyo. — New Year’s Eve in Jackson Hole—it’s living the dream. Make sure it doesn’t become your nightmare.

A sober driver is a must on a night known for overindulgence. Don’t start 2020 with legal trouble or worse. Options in and around the valley are numerous. There’s no excuse for getting behind the wheel with a buzz on.

For starters, START Bus will carry a more robust service for NYE. Special late-night service includes additional runs departing Town Square for outlying areas through 1:30 a.m. A West Bank run will leave get you back out to Village, leaving town at 12:30 a.m., and carry Village partiers back to town at 1:15 a.m.

Taxis are also a great option. Jackson has about two dozen locally-owned and operated transportation services. All cabs are registered with and regulated by the Town of Jackson, so you know they are legit and operate in good faith.

One big advantage to taxis over the ever-popular Uber and Lyft is you won’t be subjected to surge fares. A New Year’s Eve ride from, say, Four Seasons in Teton Village to downtown Jackson can run you nearly $200 ($300 for UberXL) because of high volume.

Both Uber and Lyft do operate in Jackson Hole. There are a limited number of drivers but the service is growing every day.

And finally, check with your place of lodging regarding transportation. Many hotels offer shuttle service into and around town. That can at least get you and your party to dinner to start the evening.

New Year’s Eve could have a bit of new snow falling at some point late that night, so driving might be especially challenging for anyone new to the area. Leave it to the pros and enjoy ringing in the new year.
