Mating season means the Sage Grouse Strut

JACKSON, WY — Every spring, male sage grouse engage in a mating dance affectionately called the “Sage Grouse Strut.”

It’s quite the spectacle, and a display of mother nature at her finest. The male grouse puff out their chests and fill a yellow balloon-like pouch, thrusting their head in the air and, quite literally, strutting to get the female’s attention. Ah, the things we do for love…

Avid birders or people curious about the birds’ peculiar mating rituals are invited to participate in the Sage Grouse Strut viewing program through Grand Teton National Park. Park rangers will lead groups of spectators April 20-21, 27-28, and May 4-5.

Prepare for an early morning — groups will meet at the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center at 5:30 a.m. Dress warmly and bring cameras, spotting scopes, and/or binoculars. The program is free, but space is limited. Call 307-739-3399 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to make your reservation.

Spectators, be respectful! If you’re going to try to watch the Sage Grouse Strut on your own, read up on how to have the smallest impact on the wildlife you’re observing.
