STAR VALLEY, WYO – The Marten Creek Fire showed some growth yesterday as firefighters focused aerial attack resources on both the south and east sides of the fire to reduce fire intensity and slow the rate of spread. The western side of the fire continued backing slowly to the Greys River Road, where firefighters have been removing fuels to create a containment line.
The Marten Creek Fire is currently estimated at 5,919 acres with 2% containment. There are 264 personnel assigned to the incident.
Today’s attack
A firefighter crew was air lifted into position on the east of the fire. Today, they will continue to evaluate opportunities to build control lines on the north and east sides of the fire.
Firefighters will continue evaluating fuels and begin to build fire lines when they find safe and effective opportunities to do so. Crews will continue building hand line to the south near Cazier/Corral Creek Guard Station while aviation resources slow its intensity and rate of growth. A separate team of firefighters are creating a contingency plan to protect infrastructure and historical structures if needed.
The current weather is expected to be more favorable than yesterday, with light winds and cool temperatures. However, humidity continues to be low, and fuels are still very dry. Smoke will be visible as temperatures rise each afternoon. With winds coming in this weekend, we expect more active fire behavior.
