That just happened: UW wrestler upsets 2-time champ at home

WYOMING – Nobody had beaten Oklahoma State’s Dean Heil in two years. University of Wyoming wrestler Bryce Meredith had come up empty against the #1-ranked collegiate grappler in four previous tries.

Headed into last night’s head-to-head matchup between Heil and Meredith there was no reason to believe the outcome would be any different than the previous 55 other times Heil has taken to the mat. But Meredith felt it would be his night.

“I knew I could break him,” Meredith told Team USA Wrestling’s Taylor Miller after the bout that ended in a 2-1 overtime victory for Meredith. “He hasn’t been grinding quite like I have this last week.”

Indeed, Meredith came off a three-day stretch where the 141-pounder (ranked 3rd in the country in his weight class) scored wins over 5th-ranked Jaydin Eierman of Mizzou, and then-#2 Kevin Jack of North Carolina State at the Reno Tournament of Champions last weekend.

For a little extra adrenalin, the Central High grad was fighting in his hometown. The match took place in Cheyenne’s Storey Gym in front of a rowdy 2,580 fans who were treated to a historic moment—an upset win for Meredith over a two-time NCAA champ.

Wyoming won all three of its ranked matchups with Oklahoma, but OSU took the dual from UW, 20-15.

FULL DISCLOSURE: Buckrail is admittedly not the biggest follower of collegiate wrestling but when Sen. John Barrasso takes time out from DC politics to give you an “atta boy” on Facebook, it must be something special.
