JHHS Speech & Debate fundraising for nationals trip

JACKSON HOLE, WYO — Eight students from the Jackson Speech and Debate team qualified for the National Tournament at the National Speech and Debate Association’s National Qualifying Tournament in March. Samantha Smith, Maleah Tuttle, Leila Sandlin, Warren Levy, Josh Hansen, Virginia Girling, William Aepli and Anna Revill all earned a trip to the big show by virtue of their top place finishes in their respective events.

The team is now in the midst of raising funds to make the trip possible. The team does not receive funding from the school district for this venture. These students will represent the Wind River NSDA District this summer in Dallas, Texas, from June 15-22. This is a record number of qualifiers for the Jackson team, which has qualified students for Nationals for the past 22 years.

Coaches Londe Gagnon and Peggy Gagnon will accompany the students to the tournament, along with a few parents, in order to fulfill the school’s judging requirements. Because the team has so many qualifiers, the cost of the trip is estimated at approximately $24,000. That includes airfare, accommodations, registration fees, and meals.

This year the team is partnering with the Jackson Hole Community School and EdCo to make the donation process easier. Contributions of any size are welcome and all are tax-deductible. Online donations via credit cards can be made through the EdCo website.

Checks can be mailed to:

Jackson Hole Community School c/0 Speech & Debate
PO Box 6787;  Jackson, Wyo 83001
Please mark on the check that the donation is for JHHS Speech.
