Jackson filmmaker documents first ski descent of Lhotse

NEPAL — In September of 2018, Ski Mountaineers Hilaree Nelson and Jim Morrison summited the fourth tallest mountain in the world. The North Face sponsored this expedition to the top and bottom of Lhotse, a 27,940-foot high Himalayan mountain. Shortly after summiting, Jim and Hilaree became the first people to ever ski descend the 7,000-foot line that included the Lhotse Couloir and Lhotse Face.

A documentary of this historic expedition was released last month. Filmed and directed by local cinematographer Dutch Simpson, Lhotse has since been nominated for the Best Documentary at the 20th annual Powder Awards; winners will be recognized at the anniversary celebration in Aspen December 7. The movie includes appearances from famous alpinists like Jimmy Chin and snowboarder Jeremy Jones.

Simpson was a member of the expedition team. He and Salt Lake-based director of photography, Nick Kalisz, filmed this historic ski mountaineering feat. The two, along with local Jackson editor Pat Focke, brought the emotion, challenge, and success of this mission to the masses in this 20 min film.

Congratulations to the team for this huge accomplishment.
