GTNP breaks March visitation record

JACKSON, Wyo. — Grand Teton National Park (GTNP) saw more visitors in March 2021 than any previous March on record according to recent data on the National Park Service website.

March had 74,754 recreation visits in 2021; almost 25,000 more visits than the 51,445 recreation visits in March 2020. In 2019, March had 65,864 visits.

In 2020 the park was closed for almost two months, March 24-May 18, due to health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared to 2019, total recreation visits decreased by only 3.4%, despite the pandemic closure.

The park had also broken a record for recreation visits in January 2021. However, February 2021 saw over 2,000 fewer visitors than February 2020.

GTNP hosted 3,289,639 recreation visits in 2020; making last year the fourth-highest number of recreation visits for one year in the park’s history. Of the top ten national parks for recreation visits, Grand Teton National Park was the fifth-highest in 2020, as opposed to eighth in 2019.

Earlier this year, Grand Teton National Park Superintendent Chip Jenkins said, “National parks and public lands were extremely important to everyone this past year, providing fresh air, open space, and respite from the pandemic. We anticipate that we will see continued high interest in visiting Grand Teton National Park.”

With increased usage, the park service recommends visitors plan their visit to the parks. For tips about how to plan your visit and recreate responsibly in national parks visit https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/recreate-responsibly.htm.
