Gazex exploders on Teton Pass to be replaced

JACKSON, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Transportation will be replacing avalanche control infrastructure on Mt. Glory from July 22 to August 4, and again from September 2 through September 10.

The Gazex is designed to control avalanches on Teton Pass. It detonates a mixture of propane and oxygen, and the resulting shockwave triggers avalanches before they release naturally. The system has been in place since the early 1990s and is a large part of keeping Highway 22 over Teton Pass open in the winter months.

A staging area on the uphill side of the Mt. Glory avalanche path near Milepost 10 will be closed during these times. Helicopter operations on July 28 will require brief intermittent traffic delays in support of this project.
