MOOSE, Wyo. – Multiple Fire, EMS, and law enforcement units from both Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park (GTNP) responded Wednesday to a report of a structure fire at Dornan’s in Moose.
The initial 911 call at 5:52 pm reported a fire at 12170 Dornan Road in the Chuckwagon kitchen and possibly the attic. The fire occurred during a large dinner event at the location, reported to involve several hundred people. The location is a private commercial inholding within Grand Teton NP.
GTNP Engine 1 from Moose arrived at 6:04 pm to find a single-story structure with smoke coming from doors and eves. Bystanders reported that all occupants had been evacuated and that the fire had started in a commercial kitchen. Prior to the arrival of emergency units, staff had applied multiple fire extinguishers to the fire and had been successful in suppressing the majority of the fire.
Engine 1 and JH Fire/EMS Engine 11 from Jackson made entry into the structure and worked to ensure that fire had not established itself in the attic and roof system. Once fire suppression efforts were accomplished, efforts were taken to minimize the impacts on the event.
No injuries to the public or emergency responders were sustained. The structure itself sustained fire damage to kitchen equipment with accompanying smoke damage in some portions of the building.
Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Fire Marshal Kathy Clay investigated the fire’s area of origin and is expected to have a final report available soon.
The event is a good reminder of the value of fire extinguishers. Make sure you have fire extinguishers in your home and business. Check them regularly to make sure they are functional. And, finally, make sure you know how to use them.
Fire extinguishers can be helpful for a small fire. As you prepare to utilize a fire extinguisher, consider:
If you’re unsure about whether or not it’s safe to deploy a fire extinguisher, alert others, leave the building, and call 911.
