Countywide mask order approved

JACKSON, Wyo. — Dr. Alexia Harris, State Health Officer, approved Teton County’s mask order today, 20 days after it was submitted by Teton District Health Officer Travis Riddell. The order takes effect tomorrow, July 21.

A citywide mask order was signed by Jackson councilors before the Fourth of July weekend after hearing that the countywide mask order would not be approved by the state in time for the busy weekend.

Now that State Health Officer Dr. Alexia Harrist has signed the order, mask requirements extend from town to county borders. This means that masks are required when inside or waiting in line for a business, using public or commercial transit, and when obtaining health care. Employees of commercial and retail businesses are also required to wear masks when interacting with customers.

“A mounting body of scientific evidence has shown that wearing a face covering in public can limit the transmission of COVID-19 from person to person. We feel that now is the time to implement this public health order so that we can confidently continue to reopen our community and serve visitors and locals,” Riddell said. “This is going to be truly a community-wide effort to ensure we protect the most vulnerable in our community, avert further economic shutdowns, and give our healthcare system a chance to not become overwhelmed as cases rise in Teton County.”

There are exceptions to the order, including if a person has a medical condition for whom wearing a face covering would adversely affect their ability to breathe.
